Dinner ends, the dishwasher is open, and the plates need a home. A shelf near the table sounds convenient—until its legs narrow the route between the sink and stove. That daily route matters more than whether the styled shelf looks good in a photograph.
Why open storage is in the conversation
On October 13, Homes & Gardens described the use of an IKEA KOLBJÖRN unit to keep dishes accessible in a Manhattan kitchen. The story is an example of using an affordable visible shelf in a high-end room, not proof that the same unit fits every apartment. IKEA's current product page for one KOLBJÖRN shelf unit lists a 31½-inch width, 17¾-inch height, adjustable feet, and a requirement to anchor it securely. Confirm the exact model and current specifications for any unit you shortlist; the featured kitchen may use a different configuration.
Start with dishes, not display space
Stack the plates, bowls, and mugs used in a normal week. Measure the widest platter, the height of each stack, and whether a person can lift it without moving other objects. If most dishes are behind cabinet doors now, try relocating just the daily set for a week before buying more storage.
Map the working clearance
Place painter's tape at the proposed shelf footprint. Open the oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher, then carry a plate from sink to table. Notice whether someone else can pass safely. A narrow unit can still be awkward when its depth projects into a turn.
Safety and upkeep are part of the purchase
Check the manufacturer's load and anchoring instructions for the exact model. IKEA warns that the referenced KOLBJÖRN unit is a tipping hazard unless securely anchored. A renter should ask about permitted fasteners before ordering; a professional can advise on uncertain wall types. Keep heavy dishes low, and think about grease and dust if the unit sits beside the cooktop. Open storage earns its visibility only when cleaning it is manageable.
When it is worth buying
Buy when a specific set of everyday dishes is hard to reach now, there is a safe location outside the cooking route, and the mounting plan is settled. Compare the delivered total, assembly time, usable shelf space, and return policy. If the solution requires a stack of extra bins to hide everything, a closed cabinet may be the better format.
